Fit Friday: Playing on the Farm

May 30, 2014 by spencerthegoldendoodle 17 Comments

One of my favorite places to go is the farm! There is so much a dog can do. Here are my top 8 favorite things to do on the farm!
 Wabbit Watching

Watching the Cats

The wide open space to play fetch.

Playing with my three favorite pals:
Abbey, Louie, and Carlie

Going on walks up and down the long driveway.

Explore the flower gardens.
(Don’t tell Grandma)

Just frolicking around.

And finally, rolling around in endless grass!

Happy Memorial Day

May 26, 2014 by spencerthegoldendoodle 7 Comments

Happy Memorial Day

The first Memorial Day was observed on May 30, 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War. It was initially called Decoration Day since people would adorn the fallen soldiers’ graves with lowers as a way to honor their sacrifices. As time went by, the name changed to Memorial Day and became a nationwide celebration of all the country’s fallen soldiers, not just for the Civil War. Congress declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971.

Thank you to all those to sacrificed their live for us to live in a free country.

Black n White Sunday: Tulips

May 25, 2014 by spencerthegoldendoodle 13 Comments

Our tulips are finally blooming. It’s amazing how wonderful they look. No extra exiting to the photo above, just turned it black and white and undid where the flowers are. Don’t they look like they are painted in?

Hope your Sunday is bright and beautiful!

*Tulips are poisonous to both cats and dogs, these tulips are kept out of reach to Spencer.

Sepia Saturday: The Poppy

May 24, 2014 by spencerthegoldendoodle 11 Comments

We love helping out where we can, even to donate a dollar to The American Legions.
I mean, who doesn’t love a good poppy flower.

So what is the history behind this symbolic flower.

“The use of the poppy as a symbol of fallen soldiers is derived from the poem “In Flanders Field.” On May 3, 1915, Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote the poem after the funeral of a friend who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. The war poem describes of how the red poppies grew over fallen soldiers’ graves. Because of this poem poppies became the most recognized memorial symbol for soldiers who have died during war.”
This is just a small part of an article my Aunt wrote over on her website entitled, “Remembrance Poppy”. To read the entire article or to check out her website, simply clink the link below.

Hope you have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Take some time to remember those who have fallen to give us our freedom.

Fit Friday: Ticks

May 23, 2014 by spencerthegoldendoodle 6 Comments

It’s that time of the year again, the flowers are blooming, the grass is green, and the ticks are out.

If you are like me, I like camping with my humans, hiking with dad, and roaming the farm.

Check out this great Infographic about being tick smart.
Source of Infographic: Wondercide Natural Products
Here are some ways to stop ticks from biting your dog. Make sure to consult your veterinarian first, before using any tick prevention on your dog:
  • Spot-On Treatments
  • Oral Medications
  • Shampoos
  • Tick Dips
  • Tick Collars
  • Powders
  • Tick Sprays
  • Treat the House and Lawn
  • Checking Your Dog
  • Keeping Dogs Indoors

Depending on where you live in the U.S. your risk factors may vary. Of the many different species of ticks found throughout the world, only a select few bite and transmit disease.
They also make tools to help remove ticks effectively.
How to remove a tick:
  • Use fine-tipped tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  • Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
  • After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the area and wash your hands.
  • Make sure to keep an eye on the area where the tick was to see if an infection develops. If the skin remains irritated or infected, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

Thoughtless Thursday: #NoHotPets

May 22, 2014 by spencerthegoldendoodle 11 Comments

Summer is here, kids will be out of school soon, and the weather will continue to get hotter.
Don’t Forget You Pet is a campaign that started by the Ontario SPCA. In this campaign, they are spreading the word about how dangerous it is to leave you pet in the car.

Why Pets and Vehicles Don’t Mix
  • Dogs normal body temperature is about 102 degreesF
  • Dogs have a limited ability to sweat
  • In a hot environment, even for a brief time can be life threatening
  • After reaching a body temp of 106 degrees F, it doesn’t take long for a pet to begin suffering irreparable brain damage or death
  • Even parking in the shade and having the windows open on a mild day can rapidly reach very dangerous levels
How can I help, you ask.
First, you can check out #NoHotPets website and pledge. Pledge that others wont find a hot pet in your vehicle! While supplies last, to help you continue to share this message you will receive a free No Hot Pets window decal that you can place in your car window.

Second, you can help by sharing this campaigns message with others. Visit their website for more resources, handouts, and downloads.

Third, if you spot an unattended pet in a vehicle that appears to be suffering from heat exhaustion, do not hesitate to call for help.
